Verified Purchase. I was not a fan of Intro to Linux. We used this as a text book for a beginning UNIX class.

I often was frustrated with it's explanations of commands or operations. While touting itself as a "Beginner's Guide" it expects you to have a more then novice level understanding. Using it as a reference guide is useless as nothing is comprehensive. Most often if you wanted to know more about a subject it would refer you to the MAN pages in Linux. While these are a great resource, they also presuppose a comfortable level of knowledge with Linux.

If I'm just going to have to decipher the MAN pages on my own, then why am I paying for a beginner's guide? I bought this for a Intro to Linux class- and it could be very confusing at times.

Our professor didn't use it very much- and the times we did, it was hard to understand the step-by-step processes to execute a command. I feel like this book is probably best suitable for someone who has at least a basic beforehand knowledge or familiarity of a Linux Operating System. This is a very good book. I like it because I can understand what's being said. The instruction is great. I need the material given as I have Linux for my computer operating system.

It's a good book. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to learn command line code. This text is well written and interactive. It is written for the person who wants to learn about Linux, although, it is not "distribution specific.

In which the material, once learned can be used with any Linux distribution. Needed a second copy to look up questions from a newbe! For someone who has never worked with Linux and needed to quickly become familiar with it for class, this is a great book - even if I didn't understand things at times it helped me walk through the processes - it was very informative. One person found this helpful. I am using this book for an Intro to Linux class and find it completely inscrutable.

There is barely any explanation and the examples do not help -- sometimes they do not even seem relevant to what is being discussed! It seems to bounce all over without explaining things. This book may be OK for someone with some Linux background but, as a complete beginner, I have to go to other sources in order to figure out what I need to learn for my class.
